Mobula Rays feeding on plankton at night_02_slomo

Under the full moon at Isla Espíritu Santo hundreds of Mobula Rays, aka Munk's Devil Rays, feed on plankton attracted to the light. The rays are filter feeders, sieving the water with their specialized gills for tiny plankton.
 
Isla Espíritu Santo, Baja California Sur, Mexico, has been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2005 and a National Park since 2007.
 
Devil rays are under threat from fishing, boat traffic, habitat decline and pollution. Demand for the ray’s gill plates is rising. The market for a Chinese health tonic has created an incentive to fish for this vulnerable species.
